Grant: Use of recombinant viral proteins for the identification of active HHV-6 infection
by serological assays.
PI: Louis Flamand, PhD, Universite Laval, Quebec, Canada, USA
Diagnostic tools that can distinguish between active and latent infection have been successfully used for the monitoring of several viruses, including herpesviruses, however none exist for HHV-6. Dr. Louis Flamand plans to develop a serological assay which can identify HHV-6 proteins that could serve as markers of active infection. Flamand will achieve his goal through generating a master ELISA plate coated with HHV-6 IE, early and late genes, express the genes in a vector, and purify and test them against sera from both patients and controls. This process can determine whether there are diagnostic proteins, or markers, against which humans make antibodies and thus detect active infection.
