HHV-6 Foundation, a non-profit organization with a Scientific Advisory Board and a full time Scientific Director is supported almost entirely by private donations. There has been no government support from the CDC or the National Institute of Health for research studies on the role of HHV-6 neurological disease or as a co-factor in the progression of AIDS. The HHV-6 Foundation to fill the gap by sponsoring major conferences for scientists, maintaining a repository of key reagents (free to scientists), funding small pilot grants and establishing collaborations .

The HHV-6 Foundation has awarded fifteen grants scientific in the past year. Top priorities include research that might result in better diagnostic assays and studies of potential antivirals. The Foundation also sponsored a conference for 160 scientists in Barcelona and were instrumental in persuading Roche to fund Stanford’s placebo controlled trial of Valcyte in patients with chronic HHV-6 reactivation and CNS dysfunction.
